Journey's End by RC Sherrif
About the show
Journey's End concerns the life of a group of British officers on the front line in 1918 near the end of the First World War. Set in a dugout in the trenches of France, the play takes place over three days before the start of the German offensive which became known as the second battle of the Somme.
Raleigh, a new eighteen year-old officer fresh out of English public school, joins the besieged company of his friend and cricketing hero Stanhope and finds him dramatically changed.
Stanhope is hailed by his men as one of the best company captains in the army. But, after three years on the front line, he is nervous and exhausted. As Stanhope and his officers sit in their dugout awaiting attack the full horror and futility of trench warfare in the First World War unfolds.
